Mildred’s Umbrella Theatre Company was founded in 2001 by a Houstonian actress and a playwright who wanted to produce an original play together. Since then, it has grown into a fixture of Houston’s performing arts community.
MU produced eight full seasons of programming as a nomadic company throughout the early 2000’s, and in 2012 secured a lease on a space to share with another company. There, we went on to house six more full seasons of productions, including our annual short new play festival, MUSEUM OF DYSFUNCTION.
In 2013, we officially changed our mission to support the female-focused work for which we were already known.
Over the last few years, Mildred’s Umbrella has made dramatic strides to increase our impact on the Houston cultural landscape, including completing the Houston Arts Alliance Resident Incubator program, a three-year intensive program geared toward helping small arts groups build organizational capacity. As a result, we have increased our operating budget and our patronage, and were awarded two national grants in 2015: The National Endowment and The American Theatre Wing grants, as well as yearly support from the Houston Arts Alliance and the Texas Commission on the Arts.
We have been nominated for numerous local ‘Best Of’ awards, twice winning ‘Best Original Play,' among others. In 2017, we realized that our resources and energy were stretched thin by the overhead required on our leased space. We ended our lease and became a nomadic again for a year, producing shows in Chelsea Market Theatre, The Alley Theatre’s Neuhaus space and at Rec Room, as well as collaborating with other cultural organizations, including The Israeli Consulate Houston and The Asia Society.
In 2019, we were invited to become a resident company in a new space in Midtown Houston: The Interchange. We will help to finalize its creation as a viable performance space for theatre by early 2020, so that we may once again have a permanent home and continue bringing new, exciting, female-focused theatre to Houston.
